Skype woes

Have spent another few hours this week trying and failing to get Skype working properly on linux.  Still no luck.  It refuses to pick up my microphone, even though it's obviously working as I can make sounds come out of the speakers...  Mind you, various kde sound recording apps don't pick it up either, no matter how much fiddling I do with the mixer settings...

I'm determined to get it working eventually though, because then I won't have to use windows for anything.  But for now I think I've exhausted all possible solutions, bah :(

So I'm currently using skype for IM only, so I can chat to people not on msn.  Which is fine, mostly.

With the exception of various randoms who keep sending me messages (or worse, actually try and call me).  Four in the last half hour.  I'm ignoring it all, but looking at their profiles it's all people supposedly from various foreign countries with messages like HI I LOOK FOR NICE GIRL TO BE FREND.

Yeah, good luck with that one.

So I've come to the conclusion that Skype is the new ICQ.  I've used most major IM services at some point or other, but ICQ was always the worst for having creepy freaks try and talk to me. (AIM being 'good' for idiots, and Yahoo for plain weirdos).  Also, facebook chat is crap.

I'm assuming skype has some privacy settings to block this sort of thing somewhere, if I bothered to dig around the menus and find it.
