I'm in Lyon at the moment, in a very posh hotel (here on business, hehe).
My French is rusty, to say the least. But I'm making an effort, and so just about got through my entire meal last night without speaking English
Then the waiter appeared with a shot glass of something green and moussey looking. I didn't really catch any of what he said, other than that I should eat it and say if I like it...
Had a few spoonfuls, but couldn't quite place the taste So I asked. Eventually we got as far as "comme un chou-fleur... mais le vert...?". So that would be broccoli then (le brocoli, apparently). Je n'aime pas le brocoli.
Today's lunch seemed to involve lots of mussels, anchovies, mushrooms and courgettes. In shot glasses. Yuck! I ate lots of different puddings instead, which were much tastier.
Have spent another few hours this week trying and failing to get Skype working properly on linux. Still no luck. It refuses to pick up my microphone, even though it's obviously working as I can make sounds come out of the speakers... Mind you, various kde sound recording apps don't pick it up either, no matter how much fiddling I do with the mixer settings...
I'm determined to get it working eventually though, because then I won't have to use windows for anything. But for now I think I've exhausted all possible solutions, bah
So I'm currently using skype for IM only, so I can chat to people not on msn. Which is fine, mostly.
With the exception of various randoms who keep sending me messages (or worse, actually try and call me). Four in the last half hour. I'm ignoring it all, but looking at their profiles it's all people supposedly from various foreign countries with messages like HI I LOOK FOR NICE GIRL TO BE FREND.
Yeah, good luck with that one.
So I've come to the conclusion that Skype is the new ICQ. I've used most major IM services at some point or other, but ICQ was always the worst for having creepy freaks try and talk to me. (AIM being 'good' for idiots, and Yahoo for plain weirdos). Also, facebook chat is crap.
I'm assuming skype has some privacy settings to block this sort of thing somewhere, if I bothered to dig around the menus and find it.
In case anyone needed any more proof that I might be a bit of a geek, check out the time of this post
If you have no clue what I'm on about, here's a little quote from Wikipedia:
On Friday, February 13, 2009 at exactly 23:31:30 (UTC), Unix time will equal '1234567890'.
A cool number! How exciting. Also, it was 1234554321 earlier this evening... Shame about the leap seconds really.
I know, I know - very sad
But I'm still always vaguely pleased to catch the clock when it's 01:23, 12:34, 13:37, 23:45, etc. The little binary clock sat next to the 'normal' clock in the corner of my screen makes some quite funky patterns as well, but I'm probably best off not getting into that! haha.
