FIFA rankings

I'm listening to England vs San Marino on the radio, and the commentary just reminded me of something that's amused me this week.

FIFA rankings.  Everyone knows the formula behind them is perhaps not as accurate as it could be, but generally we just ignore that and take it with a large pinch of salt.

Not so much this week.  Why?  Wales are ranked higher than England. Personally, I think this is great.  Wales have improved so much over the last few years, and England, quite frankly, have not.  But why accept facts when you can whinge and complain instead...

My football allegiance is to the east of the border*, but I usually only wish bad results on the other home nations when England are playing them.  And when England are getting knocked out of everything because they're playing like shit, I'll probably be hurling abuse at the TV/radio rather than sulking about how "we woz robbed".  So ladylike.

So yes, the rankings may be based on hearsay and corruption (do not get me started on Sepp Blatter...), but give the Welsh some credit, because they definitely deserve it!  I will certainly be very happy when/if they qualify for Euro 2016.

* rugby goes the other way. Judge me all you want, but I grew up on the border and decisions are difficult. Plus Welsh rugby is a million times nicer to watch, which seems like a good enough reason to me :P

desk declutter

Hopefully I will be moving house in the not to distant future.  In theory this means I'm on a mission to de-clutter so I don't end up moving the same boxes of junk that were untouched last time I moved (3.5 years ago).

In reality, it's slow progress.  Several bags of clothes have gone to the charity shop, yet my wardrobe looks just as full.

Today, I gave my desk a quick tidy.  Again, it doesn't look much different.  bah.

desk tidy before and after

Whenever I tidy my 'office' I'm always amazed at how much excess stationery I find.  It's usually the same stuff, so either I never throw it out, or I'm bad at learning lessons not to keep buying it.  Today's main offenders:

  • Post it notes - these are definitely many years old, and quite a few are now in the bin
  • Novelty paper clips - a pot of stars, and a pot of lightbulbs.  I think I've used 2 paperclips in the last year..
  • Notebooks - I have a tendency to start using a note book, then either misplace it or buy a different/prettier/smaller/bigger one and start on that instead.

I give it two weeks until the desk vanishes under a pile of crap again.

Septemblog

Yours eyes are not deceiving you, this is indeed a third blog post in as many days.

Regular readers (hi mum) will know that this is basically unheard of.  I've been blogging (on this domain and previous ones) for years and years, but recently things have got a bit neglected, to say the least.

Excuses for lack of updates include:

  • having a million hobbies and not much spare time
  • posting stuff on Twitter or Instagram instead
  • taking far too long to sort through photos, and then no longer feeling it's relevant to write about them
  • generally falling out of the habit
  • being a bit lazy
  • no-one reads it anyway

So when my friend Jem announced her Septemblog Challenge - post every day for an entire month - I figured it might be a decent kick up the arse for me as well.  I'm not convinced I'm going to manage it, but there's only one way to find out.
